Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that occurs when certain aquatic creatures are agitated or disturbed. This causes a bright blue light to appear through the water, usually only lasting a few seconds. The piece starts with a dynamic line that starts in the baritone saxophone, and slowly grows into all three saxophones. Throughout the rest of the work, the saxophones swell in dynamics and melodic figures, not staying stagnant at a single moment, building volume slowly until returning to the dynamic figure first seen in the piece.
